The City of Annúminas
The Royal Seat of the Reunited Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor.
A white marble city which was settled upon the Southern shore of Lake Evendim in the Second Age; later ransacked and laid to waste by the hoardes of the Witch King, it lay in ruins for thousands of years. Left were monuments of cracked stone, rubble, and the remnants of the watchtowers. Those who had survived the downfall of Arnor became the wandering bands of Dunedain rangers, watching over their homelands and all that remained of them.
At the beginning of the fourth age, after the War of the Ring and the rebuilding of Minas Tirith, King Elessar sought provision for the rebuilding of Annúminas. Slow at first, for there were more pressing matters and he was at long distance, progress was made and eventually the time came when the royal family was able to spend months of fair weather in the Northern Realm. Annúminas became a favored home of then Prince Eldarion, and his sisters, a place where he could imagine the tales of heros and ancestors, and a place he would eventually decide to make his home after the passing of his Father.
Annúminas is a city half rebuilt, and half of ruined memory, where you can step from a freshly carved staircase which has not yet seem a speck of grime nor winter’s chill, and find a long hall of crumbling at the end. There are endless passages and tunnels into the bluff the city rests upon, which lead everywhere and nowhere, and one never knows what might be lurking amidst the vine laden statues or the reed strewn banks Evendim.
❈ Within Annúminas ❈
Amon Annûn - "Hill of the Setting Sun." The great hill that rises up on the south shore of Lake Evendim near the outlet of the Baranduin River, upon the top of which is seated the royal halls of King.
- ELERRÍNARONDO- "The Royal Halls." The Great House of the King, built of grey granite on the top of a tall limestone hill overlooking Lake Evendim.
- THE GREAT HALL - One of the first structures rebuilt, the Great Hall is both for feasts and meetings among the Circle of the Sceptre. It's roof is a dome of black marble facing, strewn with silver, gold, and red copper stars which catch and store the light of sun and glisten in the night.
- THE CHAMBERS - The private rooms of the royal family and their advisors.
- THE CHAMBERS - The private rooms of the royal family and their advisors.
- THE KING'S STAR TOWER - Once a tower of two hundred feet, the dome has crumbled and it houses no fair telescopes or star charts. It now appears to be held together by the vines that have encompassed it. A slick and precarious stairway, however, leads to uninterrupted views of the night sky.
- THE LIBRARY - The great archives are three stories high and freshly rebuilt, though most of the floors except for the underground chambers remain empty as scribes in Minas Tirith make copies of ancient manuscripts to fill them. Only royal scholars are permitted without the escort of a noble.
The Great Common - The hub of the city. A great open space of cobbles, lined with merchant shops and peddlers carts. Games, meetings, and festivals are held here, and stone benches are without. Wandering sellers of food, wine, beer, and trinkets can be found anywhere, and there are always royal guards present.
The Quarters - The dwelling places of those who live within the city, owned and rented by the King.
- THE STREET OF TERRACES - A steep terraced street where the city's elite live, along with the Ambassadors in the King's Council.
- THE NEW QUARTER - While the newest quarter in ancient days, the walls here are dilapidated and completely in ruin. Only the homeless and those of ill repute wander down these streets.
- THE UPPER QUARTER - The dwellings for the the city's merchants, settled next to the common. Somewhat restored though one should stay clear of the unstable buildings near the cliff face. On occasion a full wall tumbles down the escarpment overnight.
- THE OLD QUARTER - A run down fishing village between the hill and the estuaries where the servants and poorest residents of the city live. Most of the buildings have not yet been reconstructed and many live out of tents.
Orchard and Gardens - Orchards and gardens are strewn about the city, most owned by the King but of use by those who rent within. Many of the garden spaces further from the commons are overgrown and seeded by vines, wild rose bushes, and crumbling archways.
- THE LAWN OF HEROES - The burial site for those who died in service to the early kingdom. Many grave markers were lost to ruin, and it is no longer in use for fear of disturbing the graves. Some say at night, the ghost of a mourning princess of Arthedain can be seen and heard amidst the ruins.
Caras Edain - A small town on the outskirts of the city, the first stopping point for travelers from the east, these buildings are owned privately, thus left to the devices and resources of the landowners themselves who settled here before the rebuilding, it is mostly well kept.
- THE BROKEN SWORD INN - The longest running and oldest wayfarer's inn and tavern within Caras Edain. The beds are generally clean and comfortable, and the food and drink is decent.
- THE WHARFS - Though the Baranduin is too small for large ships, the port lends itself to fishing boats as well as small schooners which make their way down to the sea, bring trade and travelers from other seaports.
- THE EDAIN BARROWS - Barrows line the ridge above the town. If one were to enter a barrow, tunnels delved into the rock in evil days lead through a maze where several barrow wights still haunt the ancient tombs.
❈ Beyond the City ❈
Emyn Uial - "The Hills of Evening." -
- AMON ITHIL - "The Hill of the Moon."
Lake Evendim- "Nenuial."
- THE ISLE OF TINNUDIR
- IA ELMOTH - "The Void of Starry Dusk." Deep in the forest of Taur Edain, the trees grow tallest and darkest, and no light reaches the forest floor even in daytime. Few risk to venture here, save those who meet in most secret ways.
Men Aran and Beyond - "The Kings Road." follows the Baranduin (the Brandywine River), which gradually widens as it flows to the sea. Traveling the Kings Road takes you east to Fornost where it meets with the Old North Road. The crossroads are to the south at Bree, and the whole of Middle Earth is beyond.
