They walked in silence, there was no need to rush what they had to say to each other, and everything said was usually measured before giving breath to the words. It was how elves were, most of them anyway. And Mirioniel and Haldir were no different. Nor was theirs an uncomfortable silence. Perhaps those days spent together really had impacted them, making it easier to be in each others company. She liked to think so anyway.
“Sorrow is as fog. One cannot always see clearly the paths before them, and may take one that later proves to lead to that which is perhaps not what the heart intended.”
They were wise words and wise counsel. She could have maybe done with it before leaving the heart of elvendom all those years ago. However, back then, the very trees had seemed suffocating, her failure a weight she could not bear, nor seek to burden someone else with.
“Time is long for us and our kin. There will be much time for you to seek your peace. Yet… Yet know no ill word passed through our city. You return home again, and that is enough.”
She looked across at him then, her eyes regarding him carefully. It seemed that he took great measures to know that none spoke ill of her, that he listened for her in conversation. And yet the last thing he said, suggested he spoke more for himself than for the rest of the population in Lothlorien. It didn't seem possible that it could be the case, and to hope was to dream and one could not live in the ephermal world alone, one needed a grounding in the real world.
Yet, she could not abandon all hope.
"It means a lot to me, that you had my interests here, Haldir." She replied. Facing forward again, she sought not to embarrass the Marchwarden, especially if she was going too far with her assumptions. There may be no fondness further than a concern for her well being. She had to tread carefully, lest she put herself in a position to do damage to her reputation in his eyes.
"I did miss my kinsfolk." She added, though she might have liked to have said more, something more direct to Haldir himself. "As well as those who had been new to the realm upon our departure." It was as close as possible to revealing her true feelings on the matter.
"How fare your brothers?" She asked, changing the subject somewhat, and moving forward with finding out how life had continued on in her absence.
