Tamar, the Smith

Basics: Tamar is tall and plain, for a middle-aged man. Tired or annoyed eyes are the most distinguishing feature he was born with, and the scar that criss-crosses the right side of his face is the most interesting feature he's gained. His hermit-like, short-spoken nature leads most to believe he doesn't enjoy the company of others. Local children have been told to get off his courtyard, and they spread rumors among themselves- and to their parents- that the Smith earned his scars in some far-off war before he came to the White City, and that he remains bloodthirsty and cruel.
Lies, of course. Tamar is indeed curmudgeonly, but his scars have perfectly innocuous origins, and although he did want to be a city guard or soldier, he never had the chance. He wouldn't hurt anything, unless to defend someone else (likely not to defend himself, as he's rather resigned to the idea of being killed or dying alone).
Tamar has a few things he considers his eternal truths. "The Sun will rise and set" is one. Constant. Consistent. Unchanging. He appreciates those things. His other truth is "There is no life without purpose", and he means it in two ways. One, that every life has the potential to be important and useful, which is a comforting thought, and the other meaning... If one is without their purpose, then their life is nothing. What the Smith would do if he lost his ability to forge is best not thought on for too long.
Enemies: The Smith isn't very personable, and this can lead to tension. He can come off short with people, and he prefers to work alone. He has no tolerance for slackers due to his own guilt for his wasted youth. He also doesn't care to correct any of the less-than-savory thoughts others might have of him unless asked directly. People assuming he's mean doesn't affect his business any, and he doesn't mind not making idle chatter, so they can think what they'd like.
Friends: In spite of his stiff demeanor, Tamar has a special fondness for animals. Horses and cats in particular are his biggest weakness. He has three horses himself that he takes good care of, and he feeds any stray cat that come around to his house. He also has a deep respect for anyone who shows themselves to be dedicated to their work, regardless of what it is. He doesn't consider any job to be 'lesser' to his own. Everyone, even the Steward himself, should be a servant to others in his view. Tamar holds mothers in high regard, especially his own, and would be considered a bit of a 'momma's boy' by today's standards.
Lovers?: Tamar is single, and is destined to remain so. He's terrified of women, and doubly so if they're young, short, or fair-haired. They remind him very much of his mother, and he would appreciate if you didn't read too far into that. He feels anxious talking to an un-escorted maiden, even about work or horses. He fears being viewed as intimidating or dangerous in this case, and so will slouch and avoid eye contact while grumbling under his breath. Of course, some may decide that is a challenge. He wouldn't appreciate it. (I, however, would. Short, adventurous, young, blonde maidens! Make him like his father! He'll be doomed if he meets the shield-maidens of Rohan someday.)
