Ceolmund chuckled and smiled as the little girl clamored over him to kiss Runa's cheek. His face was still wet from her own puckered lips, though he could not imagine ever wishing to wipe it away. It could ride with him across the plains tomorrow, and keep him company as he did his best to honor the child and seek for her family. Someone out there had raised this precious child to be all that she was, and he was determined to find them; or find news of them.
Then it began.
Paega began to ask him questions... each one as they went, more uncomfortable than the last. It was apparent that Runa was trying to still and distract the child, but even a he did so, the man's face fell. Yes, he was leaving tomorrow. Just him. Yes, Runa would be home by herself.
It seemed every dour thought that had gone through his mind the past several days was brought to life by the sweet little girl, speaking in her own little way.
“My men will ride at dawn, little one, so we can see the sun rise on the plains, before you are even awake in your bed,” Ceolmund answered.
“Runa is right; she has to stay here to take care of you, and to take care of city. She takes care of me here; but I have to take care of myself when I am out with the Eored,” he looked to Paega's blue eyes as he spoke
“I have to go by myself... with the men...” he was struggling. He did not wish to say to the child what they did upon the plains. He did not wish to mention that he was going to keep the lands safe, for what it could bring to mind in the little child. If the outlying lands were rid of orcs and Dunlendings, it would ensure the safety of Edoras. The safety of his wife and of little Paega.
Babies?
The little one was ever concerned with them, always asking; as if they could bring one into the world for her to play with this very moment. The question did not throw him completely off guard this time; as the little girl had brought it to life several times before though... he did think on it differently, and considered. Was it fair to bring babies into a world such as this? When he was going to be leaving, and might not ever come back. And this was only one trip. If he came back again to her in a month, they would have their blissful time again, and it would cycle... another long muster. Would it be easier after the first? He doubted it.
Ceolmund's hand dropped from Runa's shoulders, and dropped down to seek her own. He wanted to feel her skin and pulse against his, though he could not bear to look to her.
“Are you going to tell Oda about Little Tait's adventures today?” he tried to change the subject for Paega.
