Hildred watched the boy as he drank his water, making sure the boy showed no strange symptoms from alcohol poisoning, and was able to keep the liquid down. When he had his fill, Hildred took the cup in hand and set it upon the bedside table. He was calming down, and such a thing also eased Hildred’s heart.
Ceorl had said he would sign over custody to her and Amalric in the morning. Ceolmund was hers once more, and now Sunnifa. Hildred felt a well of relief in her breast, and her eyes stung with pleasant tears.
“Awe you hungwy, Wuna?”
The little boy wriggled closer to the baby, wrapping his arm gently around her, and Hildred sighed quietly. He would be happy here; Runa could be his sister, and well protected by both of her brothers, and well tended by her new sister. With the birth of one child, she had gained three. Three perfect, wonderful children she would cherish and care for the same as her son.
“She… she wants mewk.”
The young boy was falling still, succumbing to exhaustion, and Hildred traced a finger down his rounded cheek. He was finally home, where he needed to be. “I can handle that, I think,” Hildred hummed.
“I can… stay hewe? I can have sweeps hewe, Hewdwed? I don't have to have mowe of the sweep water? I can be quiet.”
“Of course, sweetheart. You can stay here with me, and Amalric, and Beorhtric, and your sister. And Runa.” She smiled, and leaned down to press a kiss to his cheek after every name she uttered. “I promise, Ceol. Under my roof, you’ll never have the sleep water again,” Hildred said to him quietly. “I love you, Ceol. I’ll see you when you wake up.” She began to hum an old Rohirric lullaby, sweeping low tones helping the young boy to close his eyes. She stood and moved about to the other side of the bed, setting herself down and lifting the baby from the covers and loosening the ties of her dress.
As Runa contentedly began to eat, Ceolmund’s little fingers brushed her golden hair.
It did not take long before he was asleep, and his little strokes stilled. Runa finished her meal and whined, Hildred smiling down at her daughter’s face. “All right, little one,” she hummed. Runa continued to vocalize her displeasure until Hildred had slipped her back down to lie on the bed beside her Ceolmund.
Instinctively, the toddler seemed to curl in close to the little baby, and Runa moved her lips to suckle upon Ceolmund’s chin.
Quietly, Hildred stood from the bed and tucked a light blanket over Ceolmund’s legs before righting her dress and slipping from the room.
“Does this mean I have to share my bedroom, Papa?” Beorhtric was asking as Hildred passed once more into the sitting room.
Amalric was chuckling, and stroked his son’s hair with a large hand. “You might have to, for a while. You’ve shared with Ceol before.”
Beorhtric did not appear overly thrilled at the concept, but his lip pouted faintly. “I don’t mind Ceol,” he said. “But Sunni’s a girl. And Runa is, too.”
“Don’t worry, lad,” Torsten laughed. “Brand and I are going to help your papa add a room to the house. It’ll be done before Runa’s out of your parents’ room. Sunni can sleep there.”
“And you will still have your own bed,” Hildred chimed moving forward.
“Tor, we best get down to the market to get some wood for those before it gets too late,” Brandr grinned. “They’ll have those beds by morning, Hil,” he added pleasantly.
Amalric moved forward and pressed a kiss to Hildred’s forehead, chuckling against her skin. “You’re glowing,” he hummed to her.
The woman laughed, looking to him with sparkling eyes. “He’s back with us, Ric,” she responded almost dreamily. “And this time we get to save Sunni, too.”
Amalric laughed, and reached to pull his wife against him in an embrace. “He’s home,” he agreed. “I suppose this means we can cancel those wedding plans for him and Runa you wanted.”
“Wedding plans?” Beorhtric said with a frown. “But Runa’s a baby.” It seemed like everyone was forgetting such a thing.
“Well…” Hildred hummed. “I…suppose so. But I’ll let you be the one to tell him.” She grinned. “The way he was kissing her earlier? He’s going to be a mite disappointed.”
The adults laughed, but Beorhtric looked aghast in horror.
“Well we won’t bother the boy with it now,” Amalric said. “We can wait ‘til morning, I’m sure.”
“I don’t know, brother,” Torsten grinned. “He’s already got her in bed.”
Hildred playfully slapped Torsten’s arm, clicking her tongue. “Watch that tongue of yours, Torsten,” she said, pointedly glancing to Beorhtric who looked entirely confused.
The large man lifted his hands in mock surrender. “All right, all right,” he said. “Come on, Brand. Let’s get those beds made.”
“Congratulations, Hil,” Brandr offered, bending to give the woman a kiss on her cheek. “Now, you rest and make Amalric do everything.”
“Oh, I will,” Hildred grinned. Amalric laughed.
“See you in the morning!” And with that, the two towering brothers passed out the door and began to trek down to the market.
