"Oh no," Sunnifa paused. Her hand came to her temple, as if struck by a sudden headache, and she closed her eyes for a moment. She dropped her dripping cloak to the floor, and then moved quickly to sit down on the cot next to Hildred to keep her voice from carrying "She hit her?" she hissed in a whisper. "I knew this was going to happen one of these days. Not that I blame Runa. Mother was all about our house last night til after dark rambling on about Runa being a Man-Wom--" she caught sight of the child and stopped herself.
"I hit her wif Coleymond's stick," Paega added, when Sunnifa looked back to her. "She was yelling at Wuna."
Ceolmund's lips were pressed together. He gave his sister a nod.
Sunnifa sighed, making a noise as if all the air of her life was leaving her. "I couldn't even get a word out of her as to if you were well or not until I had bundled up and was setting out the door to find out for myself. Then she finally stopped and said you were fine and had gone home to rest." She leaned forward onto her knees, burying her face into her hands.
Ceolmond spoke up, "We will deal with it later, Sunni." And then to Paega, "Yes, I'm afraid that is my Mama. And this is my sister, Sunni. Don't worry, Paega, she may look like our Mother, but she is not mean."
Sunnifa sat up, smiling, "The biggest compliment a sister could ever receive."
"And she is and not a owd wady," Paega added, matter of factly.
"You little dear little thing," Sunnifa leaned forward again, smiling at the child. "Where did she come from?" she wondered aloud, noting the child was dressed in a plain tunic. She was obviously staying in the hall on bedrest from her state of dress.
"I will explain later," Ceolmund added quickly. He glanced across the Hall to see that Runa was still occupied, and then started again. "Sunni, I was just going to speak with Hildred, but it's well if you are here..." He looked down at Paega. He would need to be discrete as it was apparent the child would chatter about anything which she overheard.
His eyes sparkled. "Hildred, I would like to see Amalric tomorrow morning. I have a proposition to discuss with him." He leaned on the word, tilting his head slightly in Runa's direction, and hoping Hildred would catch his meaning. "Do you think... he would be willing? Do you think he would accept?"
