“R-Runa!”
The girl gasped. She recognized the voice immediately, of course, though never had she heard Ceolmund call to her so loudly. Her heart clenched, and her stomach tightened and she sought to wipe her eyes dry before Ceolmund had managed to turn her around. “Ceol,” she said in greeting. Her tone was kind, though perhaps not nearly as bright as the boy was going to be used to.
Still, just looking at the very teen she had heard such mean things uttered about renewed her watering eyes, and she sniffed even as she looked up at his smiling face with a trembling lip.
“Y-you d-didn't even sssee m-mmme. Wh-where ah-are y-you g-g-going ssso f-fffast?”
“I’m sorry,” she lamented, her voice a slight whine for the hot emotion still pulsing within her and making her lungs feel tight. She knew Ceolmund had enjoyed having her and Beorhtric around for the past month. Even in that short time the teen had brightened considerably. If he thought she had run by him on purpose…
Though, perhaps equally as frustrating was trying to tell him where she was heading to. “Oh. I’m going—” Before she could say home, though, Ceolmund’s kind, gentle smile turned into a great fluster of concern.
“Is th-that b-b-blood?”
For a moment the girl was concerned herself, though realization quickly dawned over her and she lifted the hem of her sleeve again to start furiously rubbing her skin and lips. “Stupid lipstick,” Runa grumbled, a few tears slipping from the corner of her eyes. She could still feel the tenderness of the bruise from where Gudmarr had raked her face with the shield.
Gudmarr.
That pig.
She needed to get home; Runa did not want to be on the street any longer, and she did not know why precisely, but she was not positive she wanted Ceolmund to see her like this. “I just want to go home. I’ll see you tomorrow for lunch, all right?” She took a little sniff, and tried to smile at him. The spread of her lips, though, seemed minimal, and she turned and began to move once more with urgent strides toward her home.
