The White City – that shining jewel that no man of Gondor could look upon without a feeling of pride aching hard in his chest. The sacred tree was withered, their kings gone as well, but still, men lived and loved and battled and raised families and eventually died within the shadows of its great walls of white stone. And here was Golasgil, Lord of Anfalas, called to council with the Steward, and lucky to be standing on this parapet, looking down upon the lower levels of the city, spread out at his feet like a teeming ant hill of activity. In his heart, he felt that sense of unity, of purpose, of…resilience. Darkness brewed in the East, creeping ever closer despite the efforts of his brethren. Here beside him stood one who could attest to that, having seen it with her own eyes, having lent her own sweat to feed the forces that would rise against them, if they dared. Not of her own volition, no – but her kinsman were a threat as well, far to the South. In his own lands, Golasgil would never have dreamed of the adventure that had brought them together. Yet he had only gratitude in his heart for Nida, for she and Redbough and the others had been his salvation, of that he was sure.
And so, Haradrrim or no – for only she knew what path she would choose for herself from this point forward – he smiled at her and said lightly, ”As promised, a tour of the City, although in candor I am practically a stranger to it myself. Twice my father brought us here when we were but boys, my brothers and I.” If there was some faint sheen of melancholy overshadowing his grey eyes, it was there but a moment. His pain was his own, and though it ran far deeper than the healing wound on his temple, he was not given to its public display.
”It may well be an instance of the blind leading the blind,” he said with something more like mirth in his typically politely attentive expression. ”But for what value I can lend to your explorations, I am at your disposal.” And there to offer her protection – from scorn or any verbal displays of malice, should they encounter any, for the Lady Nida’s exotic appearance set her apart from the far more pale men and women of the north. Golasgil had no idea, frankly, if any here dwelling in this city would have cause to deride the young woman, or mark her with precision as being one who came from the hot, dry lands of their foes to the south. But should they try, he’d be sure they understood the truth of her presence here. Although…Nida never seemed to have any trouble making her own case with clarity and…a certain…strength. She was…a remarkable woman.
