“Did…did Fael tell you he changed his mind? I was worried he might change his mind after what Papa did. After…”
“Oh...” Miriel started, frowning, and a slight panic to her eyes. The baby had at first seemed to cheer her though now her face was contorting. The young woman almost trembled for the thought of how upset Faeldor was going to be with her. Gilwen was tearing up, trying to wipe away the water before it fell down her face. Trying to hide tears as Miriel had seen her do before.
The young woman reached over to her, and took the bundled baby slowly from her lap, for she seemed to be suddenly fumbling and unsteady; and Melian let out a slight squeak as her eyes flashed back to her mother. She rooted along the fabric of Miriel's dress as soon as she was back against her however, never minding the change in scenery, and beginning to seek for her milk. Miriel's eyes were not upon her daughter however; still she looked at Gilwen, grasping for a handkerchief upon the side table to press into her hands.
“Of course not. He didn't… he didn't change his mind about anything. I swear, he did not. He's just so upset about the poison. We all are. Mother, Beleth, Grandmother… when the doctor was discussing it with Beleth and Fael. When he said you would no longer be able to well… to bear children… for having taken it.
“Pity it happened to you, and not to me. You would have been a good mother. Both of you; good parents. Better than I. I'm no better than a harlot… Durion himself told me thus. What shall my daughter think of me? And her father an incorrigible coward. Gilwen, don't… don't cry, it isn't your fault. We all know that. Faeldor most of all.”
“Faeldor is a good man. He'd never change his mind. Not once given his true word. He's good. He has all the goodness I have never had. He's a good Uncle, and you shall be a good aunt. You've always been good with Hali… and you have her, and Faelon… and Melian here; you can hold her as much as you like. I won't mind at at all. You'll be a good example for her. And she needs a father figure… Faeldor will be that for her too… He won't lack for… having a child to nurture.”
