Elin remarked on how comfortable they looked together. Runa could not help but feel joy at such a remark. Yes, they were comfortable together. They were a good fit; Runa had known it all along. Her heart was humming. The way Ceolmund was looking at her, his was every bit as pleased as well.
"So, how much did you pay for her?"
That made Runa frown faintly. Ceolmund seemed slightly confused as well. He kissed her temple, though, and mentioned the milkgoat. The way he spoke, it was like he would have paid much more to have her hand, and that made Runa feel warm inside. No doubt even the small milkgoat was going to prove too expensive a price to have paid for her son to marry a man-woman for Elin.
And as soon as the price of their wedding contract existed beyond her husband’s lips, Elin was once more a maelstrom of fury.
"A milk goat! To her Father?"
“It was a very pretty milkgoat,” Runa offered, relishing the way the man’s arm had wrapped about her. She kissed his shoulder.
“Ceol,” she murmured to him. “It’s getting cold.” Their house, and their lunch, she suspected. “And you should be off this leg." She pressed against him lightly to get him to start moving, and she turned back to the window. "I will take care of him, Elin. I promise." She had been taking care of him since she was naught but twelve. Surely the woman could see now that she loved Ceolmund with every thread of her being? Surely she could see she was not going to hurt him? She offered Elin a smile, though it was difficult for the glare the woman was still throwing through the open pane. Quietly, she clicked their window shut and shivered as the cold draft lessened.
She turned and moved toward Ceolmund. "You go sit and eat...I'm going to find a blanket to cover the window."
