Degdeekhei, Duckling
Near the Fork of the Forest River and the Enchanted River
Near the Fork of the Forest River and the Enchanted River
“End baga baina. Byatskhan khövsgör. Chkh chh ... odoo ir, nad deer ireerei.” Here, little one. Little fluff. Chh chh chh... come now, come to me.
Kelet crouched on the forest floor, her feet bare beneath her as she stood near a tiny pool which was trickling from a small stream within the dark wood. She was not far from the forest river, and she had walked in the wood long, and seen where the river of darkness met the running stream. The running river was moving too swiftly for her to swim within here; it opened wider far past the city gates, and she had ventured that way a few days now.
Today was a day to venture inward. The trees called to her, but mostly the rippling waters. Where did they come from? She knew to where the river went for she had followed this water's course all the way from the sea of Rhûn. The splitting of the stream had paused her though; the strange waters. Black. She had not had time to give it much thought before she had become distracted.
In front of her now was a duckling. She had heard it's call from the riverbank; the peeping. It could not yet fly. She was not certain it could yet swim in the swiftness of the river either; and she felt her heart pang at the sight.
“Khair mini, büü ai. Eej chini khaashaa yavsan yum be? Chkh chh, chi gantsaaraa bish baikh bolno.” Do not be afraid of me, tiny one. Where has your mother gone? Chh chh, you will not be alone.
Her hands reached out, to to make a nest within, and the cornered duckling became easy to scoop up, it's paddle feet sullying her white gown as she held it against her. It was no matter, for she would wash later, and the small duckling would still his fears, she was certain. It made a sound of squeaks, and peeps, and Kelet made more soft sounds to try and calm the creature. She could feel it's tiny heartbeat beneath her fingertips.
The people here had been kind to her; so far, though she knew little of them, they had offered her a room to rest in, and a food for nourishment, and she could wander under sunlight; or what there was of it here in daylight hours. If they should allow her in; what trouble would be a small duckling, who had lost his mother? Ducklings grew swiftly, as if in a blink. It would not need stay a full moon, and then it would be happy and free on it's own.
“Muu züil,” Kelet whispered. Poor thing. “Bi chamd yamar setgegdeltei baina. Bi bas eejiigee aldsan.” I know how you feel. I have lost my mother too.
