A new dawn
- ARE YOU HOLDING YOUR BREATH AGAIN? -
The sun was just creeping over the tops of the White Mountains. The ground shone like gold as the light touched it, especially the long grass that surrounded Edoras. It was as if Rohan was being crowned with Edoras in the center. The sky was slowly becoming bathed in the growing light, the clouds were beginning to dissipate. The world was waking up to a new day but some of its people were already up and about, preparing for their daily routines, hoping for better days than the ones that had already come before.
It wasn't particularly unusual for Eowyn, daughter of Eomund to be up early. It was fairly common for her to be up before dawn. Sleep took her earlier in the evening and released her from its comforting embrace early in the morning. She was able to see such beautiful dawns whilst she was preparing for her duties. The light from her window in her wash-room was beautiful and it adequately prepared her for the day ahead. Slipping into her white gown and soft sandals, Eowyn was soon ready for the day ahead.
She would visit the King after breakfast. He needed as much sleep as he could even though it didn't seem like he was making much progress regardless. Still, Eowyn wasn't even going to consider giving up. If anyone did, they may as well bury him in the ground. Her uncle was just ill, they would find a way to make him better. Sometimes Eowyn found herself remembering when she was a child and she would hear stories from the guards or from her own mother, of the people that Theoden had met over the years. There were tales of remarkable people. Eowyn often wondered if one of them could help.
Unfortunately few people came to Edoras these days, few of a pleasant kind anyway. War was breaking out across their borders and there wasn't much in the way of motivation to visit Edoras anyway. Eowyn longed to beg leave to ride out and seek help. However she couldn't deny that there was some selfish motivation in that; her desire for adventure and renown. The chances of being allowed such a feat were slim to none. She couldn't see Eomer giving her his blessing, or Theodred for that matter and Theoden just wasn't in a state anymore. Maybe he could technically give her his blessing but Eowyn wasn't sure if Grima would deem it advisable.
She shuddered at the thought of Grima; his eyes on her. He was creepy and there was something about him that frightened her a little. Not that she would admit it and she knew she was strong enough to fend him off. He was a considerably feeble man by many's account. It was harsh to describe someone as such but times were hard here. The point was that Grima Wormtongue was not a fighter, as far as Eowyn knew. He was just an advisor, not a warrior. It saddened her that Grima had the right to fight from being a man whereas she had only the bare minimum of right if she was protecting Edoras in the place of a king. Nevertheless it was a truth that she had long come to accept. It wouldn't stop her pursuing adventure one day but it did make the days bearable by accepting it.
Stepping through the doors of Meduseld, onto the stone balcony overlooking the city, Eowyn wandered towards the light, gazing over at the mountains. Her golden hair blew about her and caught the light, shining like gold that could be found in the greatest vaults of dwarf treasuries. She reached up and pushed a stray strand out of her hair as she took a moment to admire the beautiful morning.
