It is the year 3011 of the Third Age, eight years before the War of the Ring and the fall of Sauron.

The dark power in the East grows stronger, and the rulers of the kingdoms of men are festering. The King of Rohan, is beginning to bend with age, weariness, and a hardened heart. In Gondor, the city of Minas Tirith is falling apart from the inside out as the Steward bears the crushing weight of the world beneath the Palantir, guided in his misery by a force unseen.

Yet the ordinary folk of Middle Earth press onward, past frailty, in a world full of darkness and danger beneath the growing shadow that threatens all free folk. Adventure awaits, for those bold enough to to face fire and sword, and horror in halls of stone, on mountain heights, and over the rolling plains.

“In the end, it's only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it'll shine out the clearer. I know now folks in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding on to something. That there's some good in this world... and it's worth fighting for.”

Here is a canon timeline of events for site plotting purposes, leading up to where we currently are, the beginning of the year 3010 of the Third Age.

2978: Birth of Boromir, Birth of Theodred.
2980: Aragorn, in the service of the Steward of Gondor Ecthelion II leads a taskforce south and kills the Captain of the Haven, ruler of Umbar; Samwise Gamgee born; Théoden, son of Thengel, becomes seventeenth king of Rohan after the death of his father. Denethor comes to distrust both Gandalf and Aragorn.
2983: Birth of Faramir
2984: Denethor II, son of Ecthelion II becomes the 26th Steward of Gondor.
2988: Death of Denethor's wife, and he seeks refuge in the corrupted Palantir.
2991: Birth of Éomer.
2994: Balin is killed; the dwarf-colony in Moria is destroyed
2995: Birth of Éowyn.
3001: Bilbo Baggins turns 111, passes the One Ring on to Frodo Baggins, and leaves the Shire. From now on Aragorn and Gandalf intermittently hunt Gollum.
3010: Saruman begins using his influence to weaken Théoden, king of Rohan (3014 in book canon, modified for our purposes).

Site-Canon Timeline of Events

3007

February:

A blue wizard and his accomplices poison and destroy the city of Nalaikh in Rhun.

May:

Orcs manage to draw a party of Rohirrim northward past Fangorn where all but one rider are slaughtered. The elves of several realms come to the aide to demolish their forces and allies are made.

3008
July:

There is a call across the north by the Oldest and Fatherless for a hand of assistance from the elves on the Barrow Downs.
Crossing the border into Ithilien, a group of Northern Dunedain are decimated by orcs. One sole survivor is taken to Minas Tirith for healing.

3009

June:

The Lion of the Haradrim pledges the allegiance of himself and his people to Sauron.

August:

A plague ravishes the enclosed city of Minas Tirith for several months. Winter’s chill seems to stop the disease in it’s tracks, but many are dead and survivors suffer future repercussions.

3010
January:

The Steward of Gondor comes upon a terrible vision in the seeing stone and resists, yet sets other small plans into action.
Ceolmund and Runa of Edoras are wed via goat exchange.

February:

A vicious orc attack upon the soldiers in Ithilien sees several taken captive.
The Eored comes upon the massacre of a family upon the plains and orcs who have overtaken a farm feasting on their spoils. Two victims are found alive but do not survive the return journey.
A dark rider enters the city of Edoras and slays several guards in the market. He later appears in the home of an Eored Captain on patrol and assaults his wife using some form of magic. The King and others are convinced he is a creature on rampage from the Dimholt.
A strange and terrifying dream vision is set upon the mind of the Marshal, a forboding from the Black Land.
There is a slave-break on the plantations of Mordor along the sea of Nurn.

March:

Húrin of Anfalas and Ceolfric of Rohan are wed.

April:

Dunlendings take hostages in the small village of Fothbrond in the Gap of Rohan and the Eored go on dangerous mission to release them.

Sauron’s second Wraith is sent back to the north to hold Dol Guldur as his lieutenant.

An outlying village near Aldburg is burned to the ground by orcs. There are not enough healers to tend to the sick and wounded, and reinforcements are called for from Edoras.
Eothain and Eofor of Edoras are wed in Meduseld.
Orcs are seen near the city of Edoras and an attack upon civilians is fended off by the Marshal and his men.

May:

As many healers as can be spared from Edoras set out with a Captain and a few riders en route to Aldburg, but are taken upon by orcs, and several are killed. Edoras mourns their losses.

June:

One of Círdan’s ships departs the Grey Havens of Mithlond, bearing a number of elves west to Valinor.
The border patrol on the edge of Mirkwood is attacked by orcs, and a member of the guard is unaccounted for.
The Witch King leads a legion of orcs to an attack on Osgiliath.

July:

The weaponsmaster disappears from Mirkwood, and a search is sent after him into the wilds.

August:

A meeting of the White Council is summoned in Rivendell and the participants gather with news of forboding.

September:

A band of strange orcs able to walk in daylight draws near to the city of Edoras and is fended off by a stranger from the north and a watchful Captain.

October:

There is a slave-break near the sea of Nurn in Mordor.

November:

December:

Prince Adrahil II of Dol Amroth is assasinated, and Imrahil becomes the reigning Prince.

A stranger from the north hauls two injured people into Edoras in the night, one of which is an elf, and while they are in the Healing Hall, dark cloaked figures enter. The creatures slaughter most of the healing patients and are eventually fended off with fire. What was feared as ghosts of the Dimholt are revealed to be much more forboding Wraiths from the Black Land.
