.The Facade.
Character Name: Adûnaphel, Úlairë Cantëa, the Undying
Name Meaning: Daughter of the West, the Fourth Ringwraith
Age: ~5000
Date of Birth: The Second Age
Race: Nazgûl, formerly Black Numenorean
Residence: Mordor
Profession: Servant of the Shadow, Lieutenant of Sauron
Appearance: Adûnaphel, being a wraith, cannot be seen by the naked eye. Only the truly powerful, whether it is the natural power of the Wise or the borrowed power of a ringbearer, can look upon her terrible form directly. After so many thousands of years corrupted by the will of Sauron, she is little more than a mummy wreathed in silver mail and a great crown, mocking the authority she once held as a mortal. To the common folk, the Nazgûl appears as a cloaked figure with hands and feet of strong steel. The particularly unlucky might catch a glimpse of glowing red eyes beneath her hood. Although she does know the way to briefly wear a fair form as her master once did and as other ringwraiths do now, the Fourth of the Nine rarely calls upon the beauty of her ancient days.
Personality: Hers is the will of the Dark Lord. All vestige of individuality has been worn away in the service of Sauron. Where her malice ended and became his, not even even Adûnaphel, herself, can say. Perhaps even Sauron does not know for sure.
.The Blood.
Parents: Banished from memory.
Sibling(s): The Nazgûl
Spouse: n/a
Children: n/a
History: Adûnaphel was once a great sorceress of Numenor, a peer of the man who would one day be twisted into the Witch-King of Angmar, first among Sauron's captains. Like many of Numenor, Adûnaphel was swayed by the Maia's powerful influence into opposing the elves and Valinor, ultimately joining the ranks of the so-called Black Numenoreans who followed Sauron against Middle-Earth.
Although all Black Numenoreans envied the elves their immortality, Adûnaphel's greed for more time was beyond zealous. Since the day she learned of death and life everlasting, she was obsessed with having immortality for herself, and devoted her life to mastering dark and terrible magic so that she might achieve the ultimate act of rebellion against Valinor, and steal the eternity from an elven soul into her own.
The sorceress's skill and lust for greater power drew the attention of Sauron, and earned her possession of one of the coveted nine rings their Dark Lord possessed. The ring pushed her arcane might beyond her wildest dreams and gave her the endless years she wanted, and in so doing made her eternally loyal to the Dark Lord even without his dominating influence pressing upon her mind.
Perhaps because she was already one with the will of Sauron, or perhaps because she so dearly desired to live forever, Adûnaphel took longer than any of the original Nazgûl to fully succumb to the ravages of Sauron's corruption and fade away from the world. Called the Undying, she persisted in service to Sauron, maintaining her physical form, for centuries, long past the natural lifetime of her people. Time wore the sorceress's body away into a desiccated, skeletal echo of her once-beautiful self before she finally slipped from the world of flesh and became one with the world of the Shadow.
Since then, she has continued to serve Sauron alongside her brothers, the fourth among the nine.
