“I think we need more practice before we set you with a blade on horseback,” Ceolmund agreed. The thought for a moment on the horse that Braeldia had brought along with her to the training grounds. Yes, the poor mount need not feel the agonies of her clumsiness with a blade. However, as she took some long minutes to work on her swing and footwork, he did see a marked improvement.
"Better?"
Ceolmund had taken to leaning against the fence post, simply watching. “Yes,” he answered. “You've made improvement today. And it looks like you've had enough for today.” It would not do to over strain the girl on her first day. Her muscles would need a rest in between. “Next week we can try again; and meanwhile, I think a bit of work on your dancing would help your footwork here.”
He waved to Braeldia to follow him once again. They would take her gear back to the armory for cleaning, and he would set it aside that they could find it again for her when they practiced later.
“You said you were good with horses...” Ceolmund commented. Of course, the majority of Edoras was at least fair with the creatures. Yet, this young woman was the sister of the Master of Horse, and her father had been before. Surely she was of those who had ridden before she could walk.
Ceolmund himself was fine with horses. He had learned a bit as a child; it would have been difficult to be a young one in the Home of the Horse Lords and not learn a thing or two about the gentle creatures. He had truly taken up his skill in riding after his tenth year when he had been a youth training for the cavalry, and in his fifteenth year he had finally owned his own horse. Horses were indeed the lifeblood of their people; they were a skill everyone needed to know. If trouble came to city; horses would bear them afar.
“Before you go. Maybe you have an idea for me,” he wondered, speaking a bit more softly, and walking closer to Braeldia that the conversation would not carry. His wife would be livid if she knew he were even asking! “I know someone… who needs a bit of help getting comfortable with the creatures. Maybe you have an idea? I fear for her safety she should learn how to ride yet… it is a difficult issue to approach.”
