.The Facade.
Character Name:
Ceolmund
Name Meaning: Doesn't have to be in-depth, but this may help with understanding personality.
Age:
31
Date of Birth:
September 21st, 2978 T.A.
Race: Man
Residence:
Edoras in Rohan
Profession: Ceolmund works beneath the Chief Marshal of the Mark. Even during peaceful times, war is always on his mind, as he spends his days teaching primarily the youth of Edoras; boys, and to a lesser extent even girls, the methods of swordsmanship, archery, and how to handle a spear. When in times of threat, and also on patrol, he rides with the Eored.
Appearance: Ceolmund is well worn with over a dozen years of battle and skirmish behind him, and many more years ahead. As such, he bears many scars, most small, but some large; the major being a spear wound upon his chest which he took in one of his earliest skirmishes against the Dunlendings. He also has a long scar along his jaw to the side of his neck from the blade of an orc while he was on patrol in the East Emnet some two years past. It was a near fatal wound. His hands are scarred, his arms bear scars, and so do his legs... it is at least once a month, if not twice, that he finds himself wandering toward the healing house to have a minor laceration or wound repaired.
He is a tall man, standing six foot five. His hair is a wavy, dark-blonde, falling just below his shoulders, and his eyes are blue. On occasion he keeps himself clean shaven, but more often he does not bother with such and keeps a very short trimmed beard. His large hands are rough and calloused from his work, and he is particularly well muscled due to his line of physical work. While he is working he wears a light leather armor, and a much heavier armor when he rides with the Eored. On his off time he prefers the simplicity of the simple woolen tunic and trousers.
Personality: Ceolmund's devotion is to the people of Rohan. He has a deep pride for the banner of his people, and is faithful to a fault when it comes to his own well being. The word 'defeat' is barely within his vocabulary, and Ceolmund always pushes onward when faced with a challenge. He insists on riding in the front, does not retreat in battle, and thus often returns with the wounds to show his devotion. His parents are very proud of his work, yet his mother worries herself sick when he rides with the Eored as she knows his choleric temperament puts him at a greater risk.
In his work, Ceolmund is a believer in 'tough love'. He challenges his charges to prove themselves in their training for their own good. He is kind with them, yet stern and in control... confident and demanding. The results he sees in his work only encourage him further. He loves to compete in sparring with his peers, yet he hates to lose so on occasion he does push himself beyond his limits. Sometimes this means injuring himself or unintentionally injuring another. He continually raises the mark for his own goals, looking toward greater and greater strength and mastery of his skills. While working, Ceolmund tends to be straight forward, and detaches himself from his emotional state. Though he cares deeply for the people he is training, he may appear cold to them in the training corrals, as he wishes not to let his emotional concern get in the way of them truly learning the skills he is trying to teach to their greatest potential. In his mind, this is a matter of life and death.
Despite his skill in weaponry and battle, and love of challenging opponents, Ceolmund is controlled in his personal life. He does not take to brash argument, it is rare for him to have a true enemy (beyond those who threaten the people of Rohan), and if it is a petty issue he would never fight over the matter, rather remaining silent. While he tolerates all manner of people in his work as is required of him, he does not bother with those he finds uninteresting or unintelligent in his personal life. Those who do not have goals or devotion leave him disinterested. However, for those who have drive and motivation, as well as cares and concerns similar to his own, an intensely close friendship could be built, for the few he comes to know well, he cares passionately.

History:
Ceolmund's family are a family of Bowyers, that is, they are skilled in the trade of bow making. His father, grandfather, and great grandfather before him. Many of the armories in the mountain refuges throughout Rohan, as well as in the cities and villages contain bows crafted by Ceolmund's father, Ceorl and even some remain from the elder generations of his family. Some of his work can also be found as far north as Bree, and also south throughout Gondor. Though he has lived 60 winters, his father is still crafting away, though now slower than the days of his prime. His elder sister Sunnifa picked up the trade from her father and expounded on it with artistry and delicate carvings. She creates only one or two a month, but they are bows of fine detail which end up in the hands of Princes and Lords, and even once she was told that a pair she had made traveled all the way to the Steward's sons in the kingdom of Gondor.
Ceolmund himself also knows the trade of bow making and was always handy to assist his father. It was his father's love of the craft that began his own mastery of archery, for his father gifted him a miniature archery set when he was only three summers of age, and Ceolmund has been competitive in the sport ever since. His own bow that he carries on his patrols onto the Riddermark was created by his Father's hands and he is certain there could never be one crafted finer, unless his sister eventually surpasses his father's skill. It was expected that Ceolmund himself would take on the trade of his father, yet, when his sister took the interest, Ceorl did not find fault, for it is not uncommon for the women of Rohan to be given equal opportunity in the trades that they could physically master. Ceorl is pleased that at least one of his children has taken on the craft and he is already mentoring his young grandson Lieknarr in the same work.
As a child, Ceolmund grew up in a modest cottage in the city of Edoras, where like his peers around him, he was trained in in the arts of defense fight, and a strong pride welled up within him as he learned. He knew he would use his life to defend his people, and as the years went on it was his primary mission to become faster and stronger, mastering the skills of all weaponry and horsemanship. Similar in age to the King's son, Theodred, the two became good friends while they trained together as youth. They are still confidants, enduring together both times of hardship and celebration, and now when the Eored are called out, he rides always at the Prince's flank to protect his friend and the future King of Rohan.
The man live with his wife in the small thatched cottage in Edoras where his grandparents formerly lived out the end of their days. He keeps it in good repair, and to his own liking, it is located on the terrace just beneath the eastern watchtower of the city. In the mornings or evenings he often climbs the watchtower to take in the clear view across the hills, and keep his mind at ease that there is no danger approaching their small city.
Due to the fact that Ceolmund has spent the majority of his life beyond his own early years helping to train the young people of the city in defense, he is at the minimum mildly acquainted with the majority of the people in Edoras, whether they were people he trained with, helped to train, or their parents.
