It is said that she died durning a battle, trying to keep Legolas and all of Mirkwood safe.. And ever since then, the King had grown cold-hearted and cared not for his son. As Legolas grew, he had only one close friend. Tauriel was her name and his father respected the girl. They trained in swords as well as in books together. They learned both knowledge and strength. Soon, this was put to the test. Legolas was sent out as a messenger to most of the elven lands, learning their ways as well as their leaders while Tauriel became Captain of the Guard. Legolas come to love seeing Imaldris and the twins Elladan and Elrohir and the trio became unseperable for a time. They would go hunt orcs and train with one another until it was time for their golden prince to leave and to see his friend Tauriel back in Mirkwood.
He also fought in the Battle of the Five Armies, having grief fill his heart and spirit because of all his fallen kin as well as his friend Tauriel being banished. She put people’s lives in danger and had happen in love with a dwarf. The thought had once sickened the elf, making him turn away to find a new journey and purpose, leaving him a bit cold hearted like his father. His father had mentioned a man though, a son of Arathorn, who was known in the wilds as "Strider." Legolas had then went in search of this man, finding him in fact, a great man. They had become friends and even traveled together to many places.
It seemed like wherever this man went, Legolas would go also, but he knew he had a duty. He always sought out his father's approval and knew Thranduil needed him. He later on went back to Mirkwood, helping The Guard as well as bringing forth messages between the lands once more.
