History:
From the second of three unions of Elf and Man in the first age came Elladan’s ancestors. Tuor of the House of Hador wed Idril, who bore him a son, Earendil. Earendil in turn married Elwing, who bore twin sons, Elrond and Elros. Elrond, eventually to become father of Elladan and his twin, was a mix of Maiar, Elven (Vanyarin, Noldorin and Sindarin)and human. When given the unusual choice of fates, Elwing chose the immortal, and her husband, once having sailed to the Undying Lands, was not permitted to return to the lands of Men and was instead invested in the skies above Arda, as the evening star. As for the two sons, Elros chose the path of Men and became the first king of Numenor.
Elrond, however, chose the Elven path and joined the court of Gil-galad, founding Rivendell, or, Imladris (deep valley of the cleft), in eastern Eriador, on the western slopes of the Misty Mountains. Here he married Celebrian, daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn, (109 T.A.) and here were born Elladan, the elder twin, Elrohir, the younger by but a few minutes, and later their sister, Arwen (b. 241 T.A.). Others of the Noldor and the Sindar abided in Imladris as well. Elrond ruled over his sanctuary and protected it with his powers, and the power of Vilya – being one of the three Elven rings of power, which were second only to the one ring.
Elladan was born at the beginning of the Third Age, after the first downfall of Sauron, a time when many Elves of Middle earth left to sail West, to Valinor. Those who remained tended to gather in the few sanctuaries left them - Mirkwood, Lindon and Lothlorien. During this time, Imladris too became a prominent haven for the dwindling number of elves. They chose to have little to do with the affairs of Men, only coming to their aid in times of War. They tended to their own lands, their own affairs, and devoted much energy to artistic and creative endeavors.
In 2509 T.A., Celebrian was abducted by Orcs, while traveling through the Redhorn Pass of the Misty Mountains, on a trip to visit her parents in Lothlorien. She was tortured and incurred a poisoned wound, and some time later, Elladan and his twin managed to rescue her. Elrond was able to heal her body, but her spirit was broken, and thus she sailed into the West the next year. Understandably, both brothers bear a deep hatred for Orcs and have never hesitated in efforts to rid Middle Earth of as many of them as possible.
After the rather slow collapse of Arnor, Elladan and his brother were ever friends to the wandering Rangers of the North – their kin, descendants of Elros, their long dead uncle. In 2933 T.A. the twins rode with Arathorn II, fifteenth chieftain of the Dunedain. Arathorn was slain with an arrow through his eye, causing his wife and two-year old son, Aragorn, to flee to Rivendell. There Elrond took the boy as his foster-son - thus foster brother to the twins - and called him Estel. Estel grew up in Imladris, ignorant of his true heritage and befriended by the sons of Elrond. Although when in his twenties, he left his foster home to take up the life of a Ranger.
Elladan has traveled nearly the length and breadth of Middle Earth, save for the farthest eastern reaches where an old power newly resurrected lurks and grows in strength. He was witness to the slow decay of the kingdoms of Men in the North, and the ebb and flow of the strength of the evil of Angmar. He and his kin withstood that malignancy even unto their very own doorstep, and have long fought alongside the ever dwindling Dunedain as needs required. He has hunted orcs and scouted for his father and fought valiantly in battle, always against the eastern evil, and the corrupted men who served it. However, many long years often pass between such happenings, and he has spent much of his life, too, in Rivendell or Lothlorien, or sometimes in the now greatly diminished remains of Lindon. He’s even made it to the forest realm of Thranduil, from time to time.
