History: Denethor was born in the year 2930 of the Third Age, son of the 25th Ruling Steward of Gondor.
During his father’s rule, Ecthelion II, fearful of the power growing in Mordor began to strengthen Gondor’s forces, calling men into service. One of his best captains went by the name of Thorongil. Ecthelion kept Thorongil as his advisor, and even favored him above Denethor’s own council. Thorongil advised Ecthelion to trust the wizard Ganadalf, but not Saruman, and Ecthelion listened to him. Denethor began to hate Thorongil.
Eventually, Denethor found Thorongil to be Aragorn, Chieftan of the northern Dunedain, and heir to the throne of Gondor. He felt that both Aragorn and Gandalf would try to throw him out of his position as Steward and take the rule of Gondor as their own, so he did not trust them, and did not heed their council. In 2980 Thorongil led an attack on Umbar, and after the battle did not return to Minas Tirith, sending a message to Denethor. Denethor was glad to see him go.
In 2986, he married Finduilas, daughter of Prince Adrahil of Dol Amroth, who he adored more than anyone, and his two sons were born. After only 12 years of marriage, Finduilas died, which completely broke Denethor’s spirits, and he became more downcast in life.
Denethor became the Steward when his father died in 2984. Soon after becoming Steward, it is thought that the man began to use the palantir, to see the things happening throughout Middle Earth, and to gain a glimpse into Sauron’s plan. Another motive may have been to watch the moves of Gandalf and Aragorn, and to keep himself above them in knowledge. Sauron eventually came to realize that Denethor was using the palantir, but was unable to corrupt him in the way that he had the wizard Saruman, though he distorted the image in Denethor’s mind and made the Steward believe that Gondor’s defeat was inevitable.
At this time he has ruled Gondor for 25 years, and is continuing his plans for building the army of Gondor. Throughout the many uses of the palantir, Denethor is aging rapidly, and he is more withdrawn than ever before. He is beginning to lose hope in the strength of Gondor.
