Reeds, she was sorting through reeds at the river's edge. Her skirts wet as she waded in the cold water, pulling the reeds she needed from tall water-loving grasses. On the grass behind her, drying in the sun were the reeds she had pulled earlier in the morning. The last hand full stripped away from a tall plant. Swimming past her feet was a fish and oh did Darelle scream faintly as the scaled creature brushed up against her bare foot. The only part about gathering reeds that she did not like, was the sensation of fish trying to nibble at her bare toes they squished into the mud and brushing past her feet. The sensation, no matter how many times she had done this, always made Darelle have palpitations.
Darelle, would wade towards the shore of the riverbed to dry the rest of her reeds. Spreading the damp reeds out next to her other pile to dry in the sun, as the mid-morning light bore down. The sound of Edoras from the hill behind her. The sun was caught in cinnamon strands as she twisted and wrung outskirts of blue and brown and her short red apron. Autumn was here and it was prime reed collecting and drying season for the reeds of the river. Spring and summer the best for collecting the woods sapling branches that made for a different type of basket.
The sun warmed her face and she sighed softly, inhaling the sweet air of autumn. Lightly did Darelle swirl her feet in the river to rise the mud away from her feet so she could put her shoes back on. There was a thundering sound and a smile broke out across her lips. As horses began to cross further down river. Splashing, neighs, and whinnies. Darelle waved to the Companies that were returning to Edoras from being on duty at Helm’s Deep. The benefit of being at the river together reeds was she was able to greet the men first when they returned from duty.
Her heart stopped a moment when she saw the deep red chestnut stained horse that carried Theodred. The sight of seeing the prince on his horse never failed in stealing her breath. Never failed to steal her breath when she saw someone else as well but there was something special about seeing the Prince with his men, alongside them. One of them. Not above them, even if birth dictated he was. Humble.
The apples of her cheeks pushed high as she waved to him as well.
