.The Facade.
Character Name: Finlach
Name Meaning: Fiery haired - because men can be so unoriginal when naming things.
Age: 23
Date of Birth: T.A. 2987
Race: Man
Residence: Gondor, Minas Tirith
Profession: Glazier. Potter
Appearance: The most obvious feature of Fin is his vivid red hair, that is always unkempt, though deliberately. His face in flecked in freckles, and he had bright green eyes. He is tall, at a smidgen over six feet, and slim in build. One couldn't call him skinny, because he eats like a horse, and his arms are well toned from his work. His hands are rough, and calloused.
Personality: One wouldn't call him a troublemaker as such, though he tends to find himself in it quite often. This young man is naturally inquisitive, curious about seemingly everything and anything. It's of no surprise that he's an extrovert, wishing to make friends with anyone, and his gregarious nature lends him another endearing quality. Fin is dependable and industrious, having taken over the business from his grandfather, whom he now looks after too. It is also fairly clear due to his trade, that he had a flair for creativity and is exceptionally artisitic.
Oh, and he talks a lot.
Parents: Mother - Leofwynn. Father - Geirmund. Grandfather - Beorhtmund
Sibling(s): Helgrim - younger brother
Spouse: None
Children: None
History:
Leofwynn was a maid of Gondor, not what one would consider a beauty, but she was pretty enough to attract the attention of a young man, Geirmund, son of the city glazier. However, unlike his father before him, Beohtmund, Geirmund had no intention of continuing the family business, he had dreams of being in the Rangers. As it turned out, the son lacked the skill to be a glazier, and was more of a hindrance in the workshop than a help. It was with Beorhtmund's blessing he went off to join the Rangers of Ithilien.
Leofwynn's mother was a tailor and seamstress, the pair met when Geirmund having not enough money to buy a new jerkin, went to Leofwynn to repair it. She informed him he'd be better off going to the tanner to purchase a new one, to which he goaded her, saying that the tanner himself said the same thing, that the seamstress wasn't good enough to repair a garment such as a jerkin. She snatched the item of clothing off of him, and within the week it was patched and as good as new. It was love at second sight, Geirmund, very much pleased with the repairs, found any reason to visit Leofwynn, and within a year they were married.
Finlach had an unremarkable childhood, he was born to two parents that loved him dearly, and eighteen months after his birth, along came his younger brother Helgrim. His father was in the Rangers of Ithilien as a scout. During the fierce attacks from orcs and Haradrim in the Third Age, 2901, Geirmund was killed in battle. It changed the dynamic of the family forever. Leofwynn became so depressed she gave up her business, and worked from home, loyal customers not minding transferring their garments there.
His grandfather, Beorhtmund, became his legal guardian and raised both Fin and Helgrim. His mother, being too depressed did what she could, and continued to be a seamstress, taking on enough work to keep a could income to raise the boys. Fin, always being so curious, spent much of his time in the workshop with his grandfather, constantly asking questions. Beorhtmund was pleased to the boy taking such an interest, and allowed him to start taking on small tasks of his own, for which Finlach was allowed to keep the money.
When not in the workshop, Finlach helped teach his brother how to read and write, as well as riding horses, and the two would go on adventures in the city, usually getting in to some kind of trouble, for which Fin would take the blame. His brother, following after their father, was never that adept with his hands, and was more scholarly, and went on to become an assistant to a the chancellor, a mere runner to begin with, but gradually trusted with more serious work.
At fifteen, Fin was working full time in the workshop, allowing his grandfather to steadily retire, bit by bit. Most of the manual labour, and arduous jobs, were taken on by the boy, as well as delivery of the goods. He practiced the making of glasses, windows, jugs, ewers, vases, plates and even beads for jewellery. Beorhtmund taught his grandson how different colours could be achieved from the resources and the blasting process, but was astonished when Fin went on to hand embellish some of the items they were creating, leading him to suggest to his grandfather that perhaps they ought to expand into ceramics too.
The family continue on in this way, except, at twenty-three, Fin runs the workshop solo, whilst Beorhtmund runs the finances, and occasionally lends his expertise to his grandson where it is needed. The money they earn gets reinvested, and it also paved the way for Finlach to try his hand at pottery as well as glazing. One could argue he's quite the wizard with his hands. What money is left after expenses helps buy the family food, clothes and keeps a roof over their heads. It also aids in the purchase of medicine for their mother, who is now a sickly lady, old before her time. When she has the strength, she will sit in front of the fire sowing, but most days she is unable to get out of bed.
Whatever time is left over from working, and tending to his mother, he likes to indulge in a spot of fishing, or going for walks around the city, or even taking the family horse on excursions to Dol Amroth, and usually these excursions allowed him to deliver any goods ordered, or to sell any beads to ladies, or simply to indulge in a mug of beer at the inn. Having always been sociable, Fin takes the opportunity to talk to anyone with time, not only for the sake of it, but to see where he could find another customer. After all, he had become the head of his family.
