Aoallith was a woman that survived off of the land and as such, she hoped that it would be good to her. Other than the small garden she had on the side of her home which was a simple eight by eight little subsection. She had potatoes, some carrots, onions, cabbage. All of these were the simple root vegetables. In the very corner she had a tomato plant growing. She grew different things at the different times of the year. Though, she usually went to the farmers for when she was running short and or if she was looking to get herself some grain for her bread. It was a simple lifestyle all the way. As of now, she returned home with a filled burlap sack and a relatively filled backpack. The third of which was empty. She checked her traps along the surrounding woods and was not disappointed by her catch for the day. Three rabbits, which were always pests with their rapid reproduction, happened to catch them in her snares. She then hid for a while...caught herself a single elk grazing along the grass.
She butchered it then and there and took the belt to make into a warm belt. Maybe a nice new set of clothing at a tailor. With that, she had just about finished up. Well, she would have if it wasn't for a wild boar that was tearing into the ground and looking for all of the nice roots and bugs. Those were the two main pests in Rohan, rabbits and boars. Of course foxes were to an extent but they kept rabbits in check. So, absolutely filled with meat, she had got to work. She entered her backyard, looking upon the meat set about. Boar meat could be salted and preserved for the winter. It would last a long while if she made it last. The Venison she could do something similar and or turn it into jerky which she could take with her on her journeys. All of them were tempting options, and as a result, she figured she'd salt the pork. She left the guts out for the wandering creatures to feast on. She didn't have the time to be lugging a whole boar with her for sausage. Still, the cut was mighty fine.
Bastur whimpered while looking at her work, beginning the salting process, sprinkling it nice and fine as she watched it suck up the moisture, and she did similar for her pork as she was preparing it to be stored with the rest of it. She didn't plan on eating this if she could help it. She'd save it in barrels in her cellar where it was cooler in neat barrels and or hooks. The rabbit meat was what she'd eat. Gosh she was starving. She had already well cleaned it, and with it, she neatly carved the carcass after years of experience, looking to her close hound. "Don't you look at me like that. I already give you good parts." Bastur simply stood, walked to the outer edge of the fence and barked a few times before looking at the road. It was great taking part of the hunt, especially when she didn't let things go to waste easily. When her meat was properly cleaned, she let the rabbits hang on three hooks out of her home as she got to work on the next steps. She had other work...much more work before she could eat. Chewing on some Venison jerky she had made before with a mix of wild nuts, she got to work using her knife against a tanning rack, brushing the furs neatly. These were her lifelines and the way she made coin to pay. Needless to say, it paid rather well.
Then came the use of the boar's tusks...which could be made into cheap arrowheads when they were sharpened and tied properly with twine. They weren't the best, but every hunter had their secrets to improve the quality. Now that she's finished up all of the procedures, everything else done with, a good bit of material made, she sighed after a long days work. Now...ought to get cooking she supposed? Yes, that sounded about right. She worked like this or harder every day for her rewards. She set traps every day. She hunted every day. She traded and did similar work every day. However, it's been a while. This day, she was expecting visitors. She washed her hands in a small bowl, then brushed her hair out of her face. Her work was grueling and harsh, but yet she wouldn't have it any other way. She worked for about ten minutes, utilizing flint and steel, lighting her furnace. Fire was roaring, meat ready to cook.
