.The Facade.
Character Name: Artanis Nerwen also known as Galadriel
Name Meaning: Artanis: her father-name meaning “noble woman; Nerwen: her mother-name meaning “man-maiden”; Galadriel: her epesse/name she prefers meaning “maiden crowned with a radiant garland” (given to her by her Sindar husband)
Age: over 9,000
Date of Birth: YT 1362
Race: Noldor Elf (actually mix of Vanyar, Noldor, and Teleri but counted among the Noldor)
Residence: Lothlorien
Profession: Lady of Lothlorien
Appearance: Galadriel, as is typical for Elves, is tall and willowy, yet with surprising strength. She is the tallest Elven female, standing at 6'4” (which is not as tall as some male Elves) and is full of grace and poise. Her most noticeable feature is her hair: a wondrous mix of gold and silver, which she keeps long and mostly loose. Her eyes are a vibrant and piercing blue. She tends to wear white and go barefoot wherever she goes. In terms of jewelry, she has one piece that everyone can see: her golden wedding ring on her right index finger. The other she always wears but only a select few can see or even knows of its existence: the Elven Ring of Power called Nenya which she wears on her left ring finger. She is often seen with some sort of smile, whether it is a full smile or an enigmatic almost smirk lurking on the corners of her mouth.
Personality: As a young girl, Galadriel was headstrong, passionate, and impetuous, something that has been tempered but not vanished by time and struggles. She tries not to dwell in the past and focus on the future but that can be a double-edged sword since with her Mirror she can see many versions of the future and has to remind herself that what she sees may not come to pass. She tends to be a serene, ever calm woman but push the right buttons on her and her temper flares but then quickly cools, for the most part. She is far more forgiving than many of her people and tends not to hold grudges.
Her constantly guarding her mind and often that of her husband from attacks from Sauron can leave her wearied and far more sensitive to criticism than she normally would be. She can suffer from guilt when she sees something that may or may not happen yet knowing that if she tries to change it, something far worse could happen. Her two biggest weaknesses are her husband and her pride. Hurt or threaten to hurt Celeborn and you will find quite the enemy in the Lady of Lothlorien. And her pride is what has kept her in Middle Earth so long, having refused to return home to Valinor when the Valar offered it after the War of Wrath.
Parents: Finarfin and Earwen
Sibling(s): Finrod, Angrod, and Aegnor
Spouse: Celeborn
Children: Celebrian
History: Born the youngest child and only daughter of Finarfin and Earwen, Galadriel was known instead by Artanis Nerwen. She grew up surrounded by cousins and often went hunting with the boys. It is said that er half-uncle Feanor asked her thrice for a lock of her hair but she refused him each time, since she could sense the darkness in his heart. So, the story goes, he created the Simarils, and while she would have been flattered, the consequences of his creation were far reaching and devastating. They would cause Morgoth to steal them and kill her grandfather Finwe, as well as the Two Trees of Valinor. And worse of all, they caused the First Kinslaying at Alqualondë where in pursuit of the Simarils, Feanor and his followers slew the Teleri for their ships, while she and her siblings watched in horror. Yet something in her longed for her own realm, which she could not get in Valinor, so she followed after Feanor to Middle Earth, crossing the Grinding Ice that cost the lives of many Noldor.
When she arrived in Middle Earth, she and her brothers stayed for some time in the court of Elu Thingol, who was her grandfather's brother, and while they explained somethings about why they came, they left out the Kinslaying. It was there that she would gain the name she was known by when she met and fell in love with Prince Celeborn, a kinsman of Thingol and her second cousin (their grandfathers were brothers). They eventually wed and Galadriel dwelt in Doriath up to its fall. She would come to be close to Thingol's Maian wife Melian and she would learn much from Melian. And life was peaceful for a time after her marriage until the Sindar learned the truth about the Kinslaying and everything. Thingol was angry and forbid Quenya from being spoken and that all Noldor were to leave Menegroth (except her due to her marriage to Celeborn and friendship with Melian, and likely her relative innocence in it all). In time his anger cooled and soon the Simarils were to come to Doriath, where Thingol had them made into a necklace by some Dwarves, who later slew Thingol and others to get the necklace. It was recovered but soon the sons of Feanor came for the Simarils, causing the Second Kinslaying and the destruction of Doriath.
She escaped with her husband and the other survivors to the Isle of Balar where once again the sons of Feanor came and demanded the Simarils, which when they were refused caused the Third Kinslaying. Finally the Valar intervened and defeated Morgoth and caused the destruction of Beleriand. They offered the Noldor a chance to return to Valinor to ask for forgiveness and Galadriel refused, partly to stay in Middle Earth with her husband who did not want to leave but mostly because she was too proud to beg for forgiveness for something she had no part in.
For a time she and her husband traveled Middle Earth, never finding a permanent home. They did settle for a time at Lake Evendim where she would give birth to her daughter Celebrian. They would eventually settle for many years in Eregion in Ost-in-edhil under her distant cousin Celebrimbor. They were there when the Rings of Power were made, under the direction of Sauron in disguise. She was given Nenya, the Elven ring of Adamant. While in Eregion, they established relations with the Elves of Lothlorien and it was there that she and her daughter fled with many others while Sauron approached to gain the Rings of Power. There she stayed until Sauron was defeated at the end of the Second Age.
In the first part of Third Age, she and her husband spent much of their time between Lothlorien and Imladris, where their daughter wed Elrond. The couple would soon give Galadriel grandchildren: twin boys Elladan and Elrohir and daughter Arwen. Eventually Galadriel would come to stay in Lothlorien when its king Amroth was killed, indirectly, by a Balrog of Moria, awoken when the Dwarves dug too deep. So, with no leader, Celeborn and Galadriel became Lord and Lady of Lothlorien, its guardians and protectors. Part of the reason she was so eager to be in Lothlorien, using her Ring to protect its borders, were rumors of a Necromancer in Dol Guldur, whom she had a sinking suspicion was possibly Sauron returned. To that end, she called together a meeting of the Wise called the White Council where she hoped her friend Gandalf the Grey would be the leader but instead Saruman the White became the leader.
Tragedy would strike her family when her daughter Celebrian was captured by orcs on her way to visit her parents and was tortured by them. She was rescued by her sons and healed physically by Elrond but her emotional scars were too great and she sailed west to Valinor the following year. Things settled for a time until rumors of the One Ring resurfaced and Galadriel worries what that means for Middle Earth. Already she has felt Sauron begin to try her mental shields.
