It was a long ride from Helm's Deep to Edoras, but one he very much enjoyed. The fields, the hills, the whole view of the kingdom he swore to protect, his kingdom, was something to behold. In a normal pace, their horses could cover about 30 miles with plenty of short breaks. They were not in a hurry, nor could they risk tiring the horses in case something happened. This road was supposed to be fairly safe, but one could never be too sure nowadays, especially when carrying a report to the King. The company was low in numbers, just about 5 riders, with their Captain taking the lead. All fair-haired, save for the one leading them, whose hair was black as the night.
Fortunately, no incidents happened along the way and the group arrived safely at Edoras. The sight of the city atop the hill was a breath of fresh hair indeed, especially to those who grew used to the darkness and lifelessness of Helm's Deep. A simple smile appeared in the face of the captain as he slowly made his way towards the gate. He bore his padded leather armour and mail, had his sword and axe on his belt and behind him, two soldiers carried the flag of their kingdom. The gates were opened and the group made their way to the stables. The ride was relaxed, but the horses deserved some treat, they did most of the effort.
"You lads can go ahead and buy a few drinks. On me." he said as he hopped off the horse and threw some coin to the soldiers, who gladly accepted it with chuckles. "Don't wait on me, I will take my time." he added and without protest, the soldiers left the stables, letting word spread that a fairly generous Captain had arrived in the city. And while they left to celebrate, Dúnhere was tending to his horse, washing it and feeding it a couple apples he grabbed along the way. Some would see that as spoiling the beast, but if anything, as a soldier of Rohan, he quickly came to learn his life depended on this creature a lot more than most would care to admit. "There you go. Easy now, there's more from where this came from." he said as he rubbed his hand on the neck of the black stallion.
Gratitude was something most people took for granted.
