“I'm going to be gone likely a month. It could be six weeks,” Ceolmund stated. He was combing through all his armor and implements upon the table, making sure everything was in peak condition. The Captain's Eored would be mustering again in just a couple days time, and there was much to do to make sure he was ready to go.
Of great concern was the fact that not long past, Runa had actually asked that they let the strangers who had been taken to the Healing Hall that dreadful night to come and stay with them. Their home was small of course, though seemed to be filling month by month over the past year. As soon as he had brought Runa home, she had begun her collection. First Paega, then that flea-ridden stray dog, though he'd eventually warmed to the creature. Then of course Yomie. Now Wyn and Adanedhel. The two guests had the loft mostly to themselves, and they seemed content as any in it. In truth, Ceolmund had not minded Wyn in the least. She was a battle worn soldier as much as any he had known, and her ways amused him. He had liked that Runa had taken companionship with her; though Wyn's formal training was lacking, she had the spirit of a shield maiden herself.
The problem, however, was the elf.
“You will be in grave danger if anything happens to Runa while I'm gone,” he eyed Adanedhel sharply. “Or Paega. Or Yomie. Or the baby...”
Elves had a way of knowing things. Ceolmund did not know how the elf had done it. Likely some sort of magic, even though he had forbade elven magic from being used in his home. Perhaps he had done so when they had been outside. Maybe he had not made it clear enough to the elf. Despite the fact that he and Runa had decided to keep the secret to themselves for the time being, after what had happened last time... They had only known since Yule that they were expecting another child.
Yet it seemed the elf had known all along. Somehow even before they had, they had learned. Something about sensing the soul of the child. Ceolmund certainly did not want Adanedhel to be sensing anything about his wife or his child… let alone anything about their souls. That was the work of the gods alone!
“I do not want any magic done. In my house, or out. Near my wife, nor her family, nor my sister's family. Near my children. In Edoras at all. Do you understand? Just… pretend you're mortal.”
