The sea of grasses were waving before her, up to the very edges of the city, and air felt warm and soft this day. Spring had come to the rolling hills of Rohan, and Edoras was fresh within it's wake. Léoma took a deep breath; the sweet air filling her lungs and giving her strength to press onward.
She had been standing at the city gates, and turned to east on a narrow dirt track that led round behind the barrow mounds. Her eyes took in the crests of each small hill, marking white simbelmynë growing in abundance. The outer wall of the city muffled the sounds that came from therein, and all she heard this morning were the meadowlarks in the rustling.
The woman walked with ease today, her bones enjoying the warm air, and her cane keeping her steady on the uneven rutted ground with each step. She was pulling behind her a small cart. It was a child's cart truly, though the handle was long and had been extended for her. She could not do well to juggle baskets the way some might, and the full sized cart that she worked with on occasion proved too bulky for her to pull long distances. This one did quite well for her purposes, and the wheels creaked and bumped lightly as Léoma pulled it.
Léoma kept silent in respect until she had passed the barrow mounds, but once she came beyond them, she began to hum one of the old tunes of their people, and her eyes sought the waving grasses where she might do some gathering. Fresh greens in early spring could fetch a higher price at the market, and she aimed to have something to sell this morning along with the eggs which waited on her counter top. Dandelion, violets, and chickweed were bursting from the earth aplenty this year. She had the time for gathering, where some did not. Everyone in the city would be smelling the spring air this day and Léoma would be able to tuck some coins away at the end of the day for sparser times.
Using her cane as leverage, Léoma pulled her cart with it's baskets off the track and settled herself on the fresh earth where it seemed the gathering would be richest, and she moved her baskets down with her to begin plucking the stems and leaves slowly, yet steadily, humming as she went.
