In the land of Arda magic was no more. There wasn’t an ent, an orc, or even a wizard around. Everything belonged to the race of Men. Imaldris became a hallowed shell of what it once was, for Man took control and a new ruler was upon it. Greenwood the Great was no longer great, for the forest continued to die and now there was nothing but ash and dirt.
Everything magical was supposed to no longer exist. Everything was Man now. Everything, that is, except Adanedhel. He was a young elfling; no older than what most Men would call a “Young Man.” Or would they call him a Man now? For elves, a hundred years was when they were of age and this one was only fourteen.
He was alone, for his parents were gone. Adanedhel was playing in the trees, and then the forest around him. He could not help himself from enjoying what was all around him. Even alone, he found happiness. Even alone, this had stopped his heart from grieving.
A little tune came into his head and he quickly remembered it was a song his Naneth had sung to him.
O môr henion i dhû:
Ely siriar, êl síla.Ai! Aníron Undómiel. Tiro! Êl eria e môr. I 'lîr en êl luitha 'úren. Ai! Aníron…
Adanedhel stopped singing and heard something. His elven ears picked up on someone coming. It was heavy footsteps.. it was a Man! Adanedhel hid as fast as he could, waiting to see just who it was.
(('From darkness I understand the night:
dreams flow, a star shines.
Ah! I desire Arwen Evenstar.
Look! A star rises out of the darkness.
The song of the star enchants my heart.
Ah! I desire…'))
